
On September 23, 2025, an international online conference «Sustainable Forest Management: The Role of Centers of Excellence for Forest Science and Education in Russia and Tanzania» was held.
The Conference finalized the project «Russian-Tanzanian Scientific and Educational Expedition» and presented the strategy for the development of the Centers of excellence in forest science and forest education in Russia and Tanzania, their areas of activity and promising topics for joint research.
The conference was opened by Deputy Chairman of the Committee on External Relations of St. Petersburg and Head of the Department of Foreign Economic Cooperation Nizami Mamishev.
The conference was attended by more than 100 Russian and Tanzanian specialists in forest science and forestry education, students and teachers in Russia and Tanzania. The following speakers presented reports from Tanzania:
– Siima Salome Samson Bakengesa, Head of Forest Production Directorat, Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism;
– Jared Elly Otieno, Head of Forest Resources Monitoring and Assessment, Tanzania Forest Services Agency;
– Greyson Zabron Nyamoga, Head of Department of Forest and Environmental Economics, Sokoine University of Agriculture;
– Chelestino Peter Balama, Director of Forestry Research, Tanzania Forestry Research Institute.
The conference discussed Tanzanian and Russian experience in forest management, the impact of forest science on management issues and regional development processes, and opportunities to strengthen the potential of joint Russian-Tanzanian research projects in the forestry sector to promote the integration of scientists and increasing the competitiveness of Tanzanian and Russian specialists in the world.
